Black IS Beautiful

Proctor & Gamble and BET have collaborated to bring you an inspiring series,  My Black is Beautiful.

My Black is Beautiful

My Black is Beautiful

The first of a few episodes aired on BET this Sunday 5/17/09.  A celebrity panel of African American Women discussed black inspired beauty trends, the definition of true beauty from a black perspective, and more. The first episode also included helpful beauty tips, including insight from Celebrity Makeup Artist Toni Acey AND a tribute to First Lady Michelle Obama. More episodes are to be run on 6/7/09 and 6/21/09. Accompanying the teleivision portion, the initiative inlcudes a tour which will culminate in New Orleans during the Essence Music Festival in early July. The website also encourages women to “join the discussion” offering free downloadable discussion guides. To view some of the first episode, click HERE if you missed it.

In Your Opinion … Work Attire

Fab Savvy’s In Your Opinion series is your chance to sound off.

Tell THE WORLD what you think. Today’s topic is Work Attire.

Book by Kim Johnson Gross & Jeff Stone

Ms A-List’s Opinion: I have lived in cool&casual California AND in straight&southern Texas.  Both are big states with big ideas on how things should be done. So when I see some one dressed for work in an outfit that shows a little more thought than black pants and a solid color top, my inner Cali-girl applauds them. However, at times, the southern belle in me is disappointed when the line between stylish and “does she want this job?” is crossed.

SO I want to hear from you. IN YOUR OPINION, HOW MUCH IS TOO MUCH FOR A WORK ENVIRONMENT? How should you decide? What is completely unacceptable? What do you like to see? What is outdated (example: pantyhose)? What are some stylish solutions or alternatives? WHAT PROFESSIONS WARRANT MORE LIBERAL DRESS CODES?

Sound off you Fab Savvy people  . . . post your comments below!

Cinco De FAB-O

In honor of Cinco De Mayo, FSF, presents these FIVE tips to get you fashionably through the rest of May and into the other summer months.

Uno: Loosey Goosey – as the heat kicks up outside, try to utilize loose, free-flowing options.

Floral Mini

Floral Mini

This will allow heat to escape your body more easily and you’ll really enjoy that random breeze. (See floral mini by PAUL & JOE)

Dos: Up & At ‘Em – Experiment with hairstyles that keep your hair somewhat gathered.  Loose buns or ponytails will keep hair of your neck, keeping you cooler. These styles are also good for outdoor activities.

Summer Style

Tres: Color Me Softer – Heat means using softer and brighter tones as opposed to deeper ones. From nail polish to lip gloss to accessories, try pinks and corals instead of reds and dark berries.

Cuatro: Protect and Pamper – In all the excitement of new summer styles don’t forget the most important thing is to protect your skin and face. SPF is the word, go for products that offer sun protection especially for your face and any skin that will be exposed.

Cinco: Express Yourself – This season is all about you. No time of year is better to find your own unique style, so get out there and do some digging. When your out, make mental note of what you like on people and what you don’t. Take it even further and see what works for those with your body type. Keep those styles in mind when you shop for yourself, and find the bargains that speak to the look you want to achieve.

Can Bravo Do It AGAIN?

The Bravo cable channel that brought us the addictive series Project Runway is set to offer up another fashion design based show to premiere this Thursday the 7th at 10/9 central. Designer Isaac Mizrahi, singer Kelly Rowland, and Mrs. New York Fashion Week Fern Mallis will serve as judges of this design competition. A prize fit for a designer king . . . whichever contestant can pull it off will walk away with a chance to have their designs sold retail and 125K in cash.
We’ll check it out, of course, and let you know if its worth adding to your weekly must-see list.
