Relief Review: Fashionable Efforts Helping Japan
As the 24 hour disaster coverage has slowed to more abbreviated updates, our routines have allowed most of us to return to life as usual. For the people of Japan, however, life as usual will never be what it once was. The latest reports are placing the total death toll above 10,000; while the challenges and conditions survivors are facing are truly heartbreaking.
The last thing the FS team wants to do is depress anyone, but please don’t forget how fortunate we are . . . and that we can (and should) help. Here are just a few of the many relief efforts you can contribute to with ease and style.
The people at Threadless put forth a T-Shirt design challenge for the cause. The winning design, called “Rebuild Japan” was submitted by Jason Yang. Threadless is donating an AWESOME 100% of net proceeds to the American Red Cross’s Japan Earthquake and Pacific Tsunami fund. The tees are available (here) in men and women’s styles for $20.
Natori is donating 10% of all Natori.com and JosiebyNatori.com sales to the Red Cross through the end of April. H&M has decided to donate 100,000 garments to Japanese relief efforts and is closing stores in Tokyo so that associates there can be with their families. Ralph Lauren, in conjunction with the United Way, is also contributing through the sale of a limited edition Japan Hope Polo. 100% of proceeds will be donated to humanitarian efforts through a United Way affiliate in Japan.
So get to shopping and help out. If you would like to donate directly to efforts, please remember that there are those who take advantage of tragedies for financial profit. Be sure to vest a charity or donation drive before releasing money. You can always go through a channel backed by United Way, The Red Cross or another reputable agency.
Savvy Giving!
Sweet Charity
Albert Uster Imports recently hosted their 2010 Sweet Charity event. Having grown significantly since its creation in 2003, the successful event is now a popular occasion in the DC area and a big contributor to the The Heart of America Foundation’s® Books From The Heart® program.
One of the events sweetest attractions is the Des Alpes Chocolate Fashion Show, in which masterful chefs make use of Albert Uster Imports chocolate by creating chocolate fashions. The Sweet Charity website says that the use of chocolate is “a metaphor for every child’s sweetness and innate potential.” The benefiting program will use the proceeds to “replenish under-resourced libraries and classrooms in the greater Washington D.C. region.”
Between the fashion, the chocolate, and the good cause . . . this event is sure to have sweet success for years to come.
Tickle Me Pink . . . For A Good Cause
The Tickle Me Pink fashion show will be going strong once again this year. This impressive student produce show, features work from student designers from all over Texas. The event benefits Houston based Pink Ribbons Project, a local breast cancer awareness initiative. Last year, this young talent put to shame some designers old enough to be their parents. I hear it will be an even bigger event this year! If you’re in Houston come on out, Thursday April 29th, and support young local talent and a wonderful non-profit organization. See the details , here, on our Events page.
A-WEAR-NESS
In recognition of World AIDS Day, Fab Savvy wishes to highlight some of the awareness efforts using fashion as a medium to reach the masses, and ultimately helping to save the world.
Fashion Against AIDS (FAA) is one of many projects coordinated by Designers Against AIDS (DAA). DAA was launched in 2004 by a Non-Profit called Beauty Without Irony. Fashion Against AIDS is an ongoing collaboration with retailer H&M. The first collection was released in January 2008, the second in spring of 2009. Twenty Five percent of proceeds from these collections are donated to HIV and AIDS initiatives. Trendsetters such as Good Charlotte, Rihanna, Katy Perry, Pharell Williams, and Estelle have contributed to and support this project.
The Red Pump Project calls all bloggers to “Rock The Red Pump” in hopes to garner support and awareness. This project was born out of a desire to emphasize AIDS issues, in lieu of National Women and Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day – March 10th. The Red Pump Project has ambassadors in 20 states and counting. Founders Karyn and Luvvie, encourage ambassadors to use their circles of influence to spark conversation about the impact of HIV/AIDS on women & girls. Ambassadors host fund-raising events nationwide on March 10th and December 1st. The project has growing support on social sites like Facebook and Twitter.
